The traditional Rider Waite depiction of the Devil card features a creature that combines human and animal features that appear to be a half man half goat figure known as Baphomet, the Horned Goat of Mendes. He wears bat wings. At his feet are two enslaved naked figures – one feminine and one masculine. They are bound to each other with chains held together by a pedestal or inverted pentagram, which the Devil sits upon, representing the material world. The feminine figure has a tail of fruit, representing the garden of eden. The Devil has one hand raised up to the sky in Vulcan salute, and the other downward, holding a torch. An upside down pentagram is etched over the Devil’s head, indicating that there is a darker side to magic when giving in to animalistic desires. The chains around the necks of the figures are loose, indicating that they could remove them if they chose to. The Devil card is often associated with themes of bondage, temptation, and materialism. It suggests that the seeker may be trapped in unhealthy patterns, attachments, or illusions that prevent personal growth. In a tarot reading, the Devil card encourages the individual to examine their beliefs, behaviors, and attachments to determine whether they are serving their highest good or hindering their progress. It’s a card that prompts self-awareness and a reassessment of one’s choices.
In the Mystic Monday’s Tarot deck, the Devil card is depicted as a large silhouette of a woman with devil horns. Stairs lead up to the head of the woman which reveals an open doorway. This represents the mental constructs that humans create that they can often feel constricted with. The door is open to represent that you can free yourself from these mental constraints, self-sabotage, and other unhealthy thought patterns if you choose to. The keys are in your hands.
